Lophophora Referrences

The Genus Lophophora Information Refferences

Here is a list of titles we have compiled dealing with any aspect of Lophophora. Taxonomy, biology, geography, natural history, chemistry etc. This page is listed in alphabetical order of the Article/book TITLE, not by author or date. This incluse "a" and "the", so a title starting with A will be at the top with A.

You may notice some titles have a red not at the bottom, this is because we are loking for this particular article/book/publication. If you have access to a copy we would really appreciate your help in getting us have one, or even just borrow it to take notes from.

Title: A Pollen Analysis of Lophophora (Cactaceae)

Author(s): Edward F. Anderson and Margaret S. Stone

Abstract/Summary: The proposed genus Roseocactus Berger is found to be a subgenus of Ariocarpus. The subgenera Ariocarpus and Roseocactus are basically similar in habitat, seedlings, presence of mucilage systems, tubercle structure, seed structure, fruiting habit, flower origin and structure, alkaloidal properties, trichomes, pollen grains, and chromosome number. They differ in flower color, presence or absence of an areolar groove, tubercle divergence, and trichome texture. A hypothesis is proposed to explain variations in the areoles. The differences in structure of mature tubercles are thought to be due to variability in the location of growth and elongation with respect to the floral and spinous areolar areas.

Author(s): Julio Mogrovejo

Title: Early Peyote Research: An Interdisciplinary Study.

Author(s): Jan G. Bruhn and Bo Holmstedt

Abstract/Summary: Peyote, the cactus Lophophora williamsii, has been called the prototype of the New World hallucinogens. First introduced to the scientific world in the 1880's, this Mexican plant, and the drug derived from it, "mescal buttons", are now well known from many points of view. From 1887 to the present, the bibliography on peyote has grown to enormous proportions. In recent years extensive studies have covered various aspects of this plant, including the taxonomy and distribution of the genus Lophophora (Bravo, 1967; Anderson, 1969), the anthropology of the peyote cult (La Barre, 1964; Furst, 1972), the chemistry and biological effects of peyote constitu- ents (Kapadia and Fayez, 1970, 1973; Shulgin, 1973), and the biosynthesis of peyote alkaloids (Lundstrom, 1971a; Paul, 1973).

The aim of the present paper is to present the early history of peyote research from 1887 to the turn of the century. We have tried to correlate the early findings with recent knowledge of the botany and chemistry of peyote, and in addition performed a phytochemical examination of an 85-year-old sample of "mescal buttons". Furthermore, the alkaloid contents of this old material and fresh material of Lophophora williamsii and Lophophora diffusa have been compared. As will become evident from the paper, the alkaloid analysis of Lophophora diffusa provides an explanation of several controversial and much discussed points in older research work.

Title: Ecstasy analogues found in cacti.

Author(s): Bruhn JG, El-Seedi HR, Stephanson N, Beck O, Shulgin AT.

Abstract/Summary: Human interest in psychoactive phenethylamines is known from the use of mescaline-containing cacti and designer drugs such as Ecstasy. From the alkaloid composition of cacti we hypothesized that substances resembling Ecstasy might occur naturally. In this article we show that lophophine, homopiperonylamine and lobivine are new minor constituents of two cactus species, Lophophora williamsii (peyote) and Trichocereus pachanoi (San Pedro). This is the first report of putatively psychoactive phenethylamines besides mescaline in these cacti. A search for further biosynthetic analogues may provide new insights into the structure-activity relationships of mescaline. An intriguing question is whether the new natural compounds can be called "designer drugs."

Title: Lophophora alberto-vojtechii: an exquisite new miniature from the genus Lophophora

Author(s): J. Bohata, V. Mysak & J.

Abstract/Summary: A new taxon, in the section Diffusae of the genus Lophophora, has been discovered, growing in the north of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi, as well as in Zacatecas and Coahuila. In the main this, the smallest member of the genus, grows in conditions reminiscent of those required by Lophophora koehresii, despite the fact that geographically it is very distant from L. koehresii, and that various aspects including the seed structure differ considerably. It was surprising to find Mammillaria coahuilensis and Coryphanta hintonii among the companion flora.

Title: Hallucinogenic plants of the Tarahumara

Author(s): Bye, R. A

Abstract/Summary: Plants used by the Mexican Tarahumara Indians to alter their perception are discussed from an ethnobotanical viewpoint. Reports from earlier workers are reviewed. Recent field work has corroborated many of the early observations. In addition, five Tarahumara plants are reported for the first time as hallucinogenic. They include species of Coryphantha, Echinocereus, Mammillaria, and Scirpus. Other plants are suspected of producing hallucinations or are associated with hallucinogenic plants.
