Description: Astrophytum asterias grows as a globose-flattened type cactus. It is usually rather flat, round and spineless. Wild types have varying amounts of white flecks on their sin.

Rib form: Usually A. asterias has 8 ribs, at any age. There are plants with 5, 8, 10 and 11 ribs. Other cultivars may also exist with more or fewer ribs. Ribs are generally straight and divide the plant evenly, looking almost like pie or pizza slices.

Max. size: 20cm diameter and 10cm high is a large plant. Astrophytum asterias are slow growing, but may grow into large clusters of plants in many years.

Skin: Medium shade of green, hard to the touch. The skin may have lots or no white flecking, which is a trait that is selectively bred for.
